CES 2013 through the eyes of our contest winner (video)

Many entered, but it was Daniel Orren who sent in a great green-screened video that snagged him a temporary spot on the Engadget crew at this year's CES. Hanging with the team in our trusty trailer, getting comped meals, roaming the floor, wearing mind-controlled cat ears -- honestly, it's probably just easier to list all of the things the photographer didn't do the other week in Vegas.

With the dust settled, we asked Orren how he enjoyed the trip. "The showroom floor was a lot bigger than I had anticipated originally, so naturally this was great as there were more gadgets." Amongst the highlights: "My favorite times would have to be hanging with the Engadget crew, it's nice just chatting with everyone about all the cool stuff you've seen that day/week and just geeking out." And as for that inevitable question, the one we ask ourselves right around this time each year, " I'd love to go back to CES if given the chance, and who knows, maybe I'll just go on my own in a few years."

Also included in the prize package was an Engadget Show segment to call his very own. When he wasn't occupied with the Steambox and 4K TVs, our film crew was following Orren around to find out what it's like going to CES as a first-timer. Check in after the break for the results.

This segment originally appeared in episode 40 of The Engadget Show.

Violence returns to Tahrir as Egypt marks revolution

Mohamed Abd El Ghany / Reuters

An anti-Morsi demonstrator tries to escape from a tent set on fire by riot police at Tahrir Square in Cairo on Friday.

By Ahmed el-Shemi and Tom Perry, Reuters

CAIRO -- Hundreds of youths clashed with Egyptian police in Tahrir Square on Friday in a violent start to the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak and led to the election of an Islamist president who is now the focus of protester rage.

Opponents of President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood allies are expected to mass in Tahrir Square later on Friday to revive the demands of a revolution that they say has been betrayed by the Islamists.

The square was calm by daybreak, following early morning battles between police and protesters who threw Molotov cocktails and firecrackers as they tried to approach a wall blocking access to government buildings near the square.

Plumes of teargas fired by the police filled the air.

The Health Ministry said 16 people had been wounded. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by the youths, a Reuters witness said.

Inspired by Tunisia's uprising against President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, Egypt's revolution helped set off more revolts in Libya and Syria. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians at the time has given way to conflict that has grown only worse and last month triggered lethal street battles.

Suhaib Salem / Reuters

After 18 days of public protests, Hosni Mubarak resigns as Egypt's president and hands over power to the military.

The anniversary will once again showcase the divide between the Islamists and their secular opponents. The Brotherhood has decided against mobilizing in the street for the occasion, a decision that could reduce the likelihood of confrontation.

"The people want to bring down the regime," declared banners in the square. "Save Egypt from the rule of the Supreme Guide," said another, a reference to leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Badie.

Morsi, in a speech on Thursday marking the Prophet Mohammad's birthday, called on Egyptians to mark the anniversary "in a civilized, peaceful way that safeguards our nation, our institutions, our lives".

"The Brotherhood is very concerned about escalation, that's why they have tried to dial down their role on January 25," said Shadi Hamid director of research at the Brookings Doha Center.

"There may very well be the kinds of clashes that we've seen before, but I don't see anything major happening that is going to fundamentally change the political situation," he said.

Discontent
Morsi faces discontent on multiple fronts.

His opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through a controversial new constitution last month.

The Brotherhood dismisses such criticism as unfair. It accuses its opponents of failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat by winning elections.

Six months into office, Morsi is also being held responsible for an economic crisis caused by two years of turmoil. The Egyptian pound has sunk to record lows against the dollar.

Other sources of friction abound. Activists are impatient for justice for the victims of political violence perpetrated over the last two years. Little has been done to reform brutal Mubarak-era security agencies. A spate of transport disasters on roads and railways neglected for years is feeding discontent.

The parties that have called for Friday's protest list demands including a complete overhaul of the Islamist-tinged constitution that was fast-tracked into law by Morsi in December, a move that fuelled street violence.

Its critics say the constitution, which was approved in a popular referendum, offers inadequate protection for human rights, gives the president too many privileges and fails to curb the power of the military establishment.

Morsi's supporters say the criticism is unfair, that enacting the constitution quickly was crucial to restoring stability, and that the opposition is making the situation worse by perpetuating unrest.

Goat knocks over TV reporter

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Reporter Linda Carson of ABC 7 in Florida may have once thought goats were friendly animals, but after taping a segment at the Manatee County Fair in Palmetto on Tuesday, she's probably a little bit more wary of them now.

While filming in a pen filled with several goats, she learned that the animals didn't quite appreciate her being in their personal space. As she was signing off, she looked down at one of the goats and asked, "Would you not eat my pants?! .... Aaaaagh!!!!"

No, the goat didn't nibble on her slacks, but it did take a step back ... then headbutted her and knocked her over! And once was apparently not enough for the irked animal. As Carson picked herself up off the ground and had a good laugh about it, the same goat charged her again.

Watch the outtake that ABC 7 uploaded to YouTube:

Fortunately, the reporter was unharmed.

Logitech to discontinue its console-gaming peripherals | VentureBeat

Longtime peripheral manufacturer Logitech doesn?t want anything to do with console gaming anymore.

As reported in Polygon, Logitech reported an operating loss of $180 million for its fiscal third quarter, and its sales were down 14 percent. The company attributes most of its troubles to a weak PC market, but its leadership is planning to overhaul most of its operations. That includes shutting down its console peripheral business.

Logitech will continue its work with PC gaming peripherals.

?We are taking immediate actions to shape a faster and more profitable Logitech,? the company?s chief executive officer Bracken P. Darrel said in a statement to investors. ?We are developing more mobility-related products, leveraging the powerful growth of tablets and smartphones. We intend to sustain our leadership in PC platform-related products where we have engineering, distribution, and scale advantages.?

Darrell pointed to the sales of its Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad as an example of a successful product that it hopes to capitalize on.

?We have also identified a number of product categories that no longer fit with our current strategic direction. As a result, we have initiated the process to divest our remote controls and digital video security categories, and we plan to discontinue other non-strategic products, such as speaker docks and console gaming peripherals, by the end of [the year].?

In the console gaming space, Logitech never had the presence of companies like Madcatz or Nyko. It?s unlikely that gamers will notice that store shelves at GameStop or Walmart no longer

Four Sensational Facts About Gold Investing | Frank Holmes ...

Our ever-popular Periodic Table of Commodity Returns has been updated through 2012. Investor Alert readers love this chart as it shows a decade of results across 14 different commodities, providing strikingly rich information in a very familiar format.

Last year, 11 commodities rose in value, with wheat rising as the top crop after seeing a significant decline in 2011. It was a similar rags-to-riches story for the next few leaders, including lead, zinc, natural gas and platinum, which all climbed double digits in 2012 after falling in 2011.

Only three commodities declined over the year: Crude oil fell by 7 percent after rising 8 percent the previous year. Nickel declined for the second year in a row. In 2012, the metal lost 9 percent and in 2011, nickel fell another 24 percent.

Coal was the worst-performing commodity in 2012, falling nearly 17 percent. Coal?s been going through a rough spell lately; in fact, the commodity has not been king for five years (although it did record a 31 percent increase in 2010). As Portfolio Manager Evan Smith explained to listeners during our recent presentation, for the first time ever in the U.S., natural gas provided more electricity and power than coal did.

As you can see from the table, commodities often have wide price fluctuations from year to year given the many factors affecting supply and demand, such as government policies, union strikes, and currency volatility. That?s why when it comes to commodities and commodity producers, many investors ?leave the driving? to active money managers who understand these specialized assets and the global trends affecting them.

Take gold and gold companies, for example. After investing in the mining industry for decades, we?ve taken note of several facts about gold that continue to surprise our investors. Here are four of the latest:

1. Gold Has Been A Consistent Performer Over The Decade

While the precious metal did not shoot the lights out in 2012, gold?s bull rally goes on. It ended the year up 7 percent, making it a phenomenal 12th year in a row that gold rose in value. In a special gold bar version of the Periodic Table below, you can easily see gold?s rotation among the commodities from year to year.

What?s fascinating is the three-year rising pattern relative to other commodities that emerges when you focus on the bars. Over the past 10 years, gold has risen in position compared with the others for three years in a row, then fallen in relative position in the fourth year before repeating the cycle. Will it follow the same pattern and be in the top half of the Periodic Table in 2013?

Periodic Table of Commodity Returns - Gold Performance

2. Gold Should Remain A Hot Commodity In 2013

Considering the global easing cycle and the continuous running of monetary printing presses, I believe the Fear Trade will continue to be a driver of gold over the next several months. Take a look at the projected rise in the balance sheets as a percent of GDP from the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England over 2013. The ECB is estimated to have a balance sheet that is nearly 50 percent of its GDP by the end of the year. The Bank of Japan is right behind the ECB, with its balance sheet projected to be nearly 35 percent of GDP. As Mike Shedlock of Mish?s Global Economic Trend Analysis said, ?The race is on to see which central bank can load up its balance sheet with the most garbage the fastest.?

Central Bank Balance Sheets (% of GDP)

My friend Ian McAvity also summed it up well in his Deliberations on World Markets: ?Gauging from the panicky actions of the major central banks, I would still prefer to own gold than their paper.? With the monetary printing presses warm and real interest rates in the red, gold will likely glimmer for another year.

3. Gold Is The Least Volatile Commodity On The Table

Given the fact that every gold move is analyzed and dissected by the media, it may surprise you that this precious metal was actually the least volatile of the 14 commodities. Its rolling 12-month standard deviation (sigma) over the past 10 years has been 14 percent, compared to the most volatile commodity, (nickel), which has a rolling 12-month sigma of nearly 60 percent.

Here?s another way to look at the surprisingly low volatility of gold. Looking at the frequency of 10 percent moves up or down over any 20 trading days, the metal is only slightly more volatile than the S&P 500. Gold companies, crude oil and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index have all experienced more up and down moves than gold.

measuring monthly volatility 31 dec 2012

Whereas card counting at a Blackjack table can get you booted from casinos and barred for life, as an investor, you are allowed to take full advantage of counting the 10 percent moves.

Over 2013, you can count on gold moving in either direction, so even if the metal experiences extreme volatility to the downside, regardless of what the headlines report, Investor Alert readers know that any dip in price offers potential buying opportunities. Keep in mind though, that it?s prudent to invest only 5 to 10 percent of your total portfolio in gold and gold stocks.

4. The Last 4 Years Were Better Than You Thought

Recently, I showed how the S&P 500 Index and gold bullion significantly outperformed the iShares Core Total US Bond ETF. Many investors asked about gold stock performance. As you can see below, the NYSE Arca Gold BUGS Index (HUI) experienced quite a gain, increasing more than 50 percent on a cumulative basis since the beginning of 2009. Both considerably outperformed the bond investment.

Bullion and Gold Stocks Outperformed Bonds

What?s sensational news to precious metals investors sometimes doesn?t make the cut as breaking news. Shortly before I was scheduled to talk to CNBC about silver on Friday, my appearance was canceled as reporters preempted my investing insights for what was viewed as a more sensational story about millionaire and fugitive John McAfee.

In the meantime, I?ll continue sharing these fascinating facts about gold, silver and other commodities with investors at Cambridge House?s Resource Investment Conference in Vancouver and the World Money Show in Orlando, Florida. Hope to see you there!

The S&P 500 Stock Index is a widely recognized capitalization-weighted index of 500 common stock prices in U.S. companies. The NYSE Arca Gold BUGS (Basket of Unhedged Gold Stocks) Index (HUI) is a modified equal dollar weighted index of companies involved in gold mining. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index is a free float-adjusted market capitalization index that is designed to measure equity market performance in the global emerging markets. Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. The more spread apart the data, the higher the deviation. Standard deviation is also known as historical volatility.
