Apple patent filing describes phone concept with wrap-around AMOLED display

Apple patent filing describes phone concept with wrap-around AMOLED display

Behold, the iPhone 6. Nah, we're only joking -- what you see above is a diagram lifted from an Apple patent application that popped up at the USPTO today, which describes a "consumer electronic product" that's nothing but screen. The patent involves building a device from an open-ended transparent body (of glass, for example) that becomes a full wrap-around display when a flexible AMOLED screen is unfurled within it. It doesn't imagine all that real-estate will necessarily be used at once, though, and includes details of a "detection mechanism," such as a camera and facial recognition software, which would determine how much of the screen you can see, so that power is only sent to the parts that are in view. It's important to note that, apart from mentioning some real-world applications, the concept and method of constructing a wrap-around display are all the application covers. In other words, this patent does not describe anything close to a complete device. Apologies if we've killed your buzz, but we're just managing expectations before we move onto some interesting spitballing from Apple about what other design features such a device could carry -- read on after the break for more.

Ill. man arrested in NJ with stolen Wis. cheese

CASHTON, Wis. (AP) ? An Illinois man accused of stealing 21 tons of Wisconsin cheese has been arrested in New Jersey.

New Jersey authorities say the 34-year-old man from Plainfield, Ill., was arrested Tuesday afternoon.

New Jersey State Police Lt. Stephen Jones said Wednesday the man was driving a refrigerated truck carrying 42,000 pounds of Muenster cheese. Jones says the cheese company, K&K Cheese in Cashton, Wis., valued the cargo at $200,000.

New Jersey Detective Oliver Sissman tells WISC-TV in Wisconsin that (http://bit.ly/13y6Kd8 ) the suspect used false paperwork to obtain the cheese.

Company spokesman Kevin Everhart says K&K can't guarantee the cheese hasn't been tampered with, so it didn't ask for the product back.

Jones says if the cheese passes inspections by health authorities it will be donated to charity.

Palm Top Theater turns your iPhone into a mini-3D display

"Pepper's ghost" isn't the sort of phrase you hear very often at a show like SXSW. In amongst all the latest generation technology, there aren't too many folks discussing hundreds years old optical concepts. But the the idea's a driving force in the Palm Top Theater, an iPhone case that turns smartphone videos into a miniature 3D viewing experience. The peripheral utilizes three small drop down displays -- the rear is a full mirror with two half mirrors in front it, reflecting images from the phone display into what appears to be a three-dimension object -- and really, it a stunning little effect.

The Palm Top requires the use of a proprietary file format that essentially splits the displayed image or video into three parts. The company's providing some video for users, as well as a converter app to make custom footage. The device is available now for around $36 -- not super expensive, though it's hard to see such a device as anything but a niche product, especially since the opening makes for a fairly limited viewing space. It would be extremely cool to see this on a larger space, but in the meantime, you're stuck with a little window into the technology.

Work Til You're 85?And Beat Social Security | Graziadio Voice ...

Senior businessman wands into ocean

I recently had lunch with a good friend who was knowledgeable about retirement, and he asked me if I had heard about an ?obscure incentive? that Social Security provides for enhanced benefits if you worked into your 80s.

I said that I had not, and then we both chuckled as neither of us had any intention to work into our 80s. The only thing that would change my mind would be if this obscure incentive was, in fact a really big incentive.

I?ll leave it to you to see if you feel it?s enough of an incentive for your own situation.

Here?s how it works: Social Security will automatically recalculate your benefits as you continue to work. The program will average your highest 35 years of earnings to figure your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings or AIME. This AIME gets put into a formula to ultimately figure out your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA), which is actually your full retirement benefit.

Laurence Kotlikoff wrote about this ?obscure incentive? on Forbes.com and I?ll let him explain how this can lead to more dough in your pocket:

?Social Security considers all your covered earnings from age 16 on and indexes, based on historic wage growth, all earnings through the year you are age 60. Earnings after age 60 are just treated at face value. So if you are now, say, 65, are still working, and you started work at 16, you have 45 years of indexed earnings and 4 years of nonindexed earnings. Social Security then takes the 35 largest of these values to compute your AIME.

If your current earnings are above the smallest of the 35 (ignoring this year?s earnings) being used to form the AIME, bingo! You?ll raise your AIME, which will raise your PIA, which will raise your Social Security check (checks, if your dependents are also collecting).?

Kotlikoff goes on to point out that he evaluated this for himself (he?s 62, feels great and is thankfully for all of us, still working and letting us know information like this) and he came to recognize that for him ?working to age 80 will raise my lifetime Social Security benefits by 22%.?

He goes on to point out that ?working from 70 to 80 would generate an even larger increase in lifetime benefits? as the income that he was earning in these later years would ?kick out all of the low earning ages out of my top 35.?

Working into my 70s and 80s did not sound like the retirement I had in mind, but fortunately the reality is that even continuing to work into your 60s can increase your retirement benefits. Emily Brandon had pointed this out when she wrote, ?You can claim Social Security benefits at age 62, but continuing to work without signing up for Social Security until you reach full retirement age or further delaying up until age 70 will increase your retirement benefits, assuming you now make more than you did in your 20s.?

I require things to be simplified, and simple is not a term that can be used when discussing Social Security. So the most simplistic way that I can summarize this is to conclude that if I?m earning a good salary that?s higher than when I was younger, feel great, and enjoy what I do in my 60s, I should continue to do that for as long as possible, as it will provide for increased benefits as I live longer.

By delaying my retirement age to 70 and continuing to earn wages that are higher that I earned in my younger days, I will generate a larger increase in lifetime benefits from Social Security.

I can?t wait until I have lunch with my friend again and discuss how I did in fact look into this ?obscure incentive? and can now clarify in simple terms what this would provide to me.

I?m sure, however, that we will once again chuckle at the thought of working beyond our 70s and into our 80s for this obscure incentive. In fact, although this all sounds good, I still think I would order the burger over the salad and take my chances.

5 Key Principles To Remember When Investing In Physical Gold ...

Contributor Gary Christenson has been focusing lately on the fundamental motives of investing in physical gold and silver. He has written some excellent pieces in which he explains the key principles of owning bullion. This article summarizes the key benefits of investing in the precious metals.

For bullion investors, it is a great way to focus on the fundamental reasons why they have chosen to own PHYSICAL gold and silver. Especially in times like these, where the media is using every bit of news against the precious metals, where almost all major financial institutions revise their gold forecasts downward, and where the number of statements pointing to the end of the gold bull market is countless.

(1) In bull markets, prices go up only 60% of the trading days

Bull markets include many down days and weeks. If we became discouraged every time gold moved down on a particular day, we would live 40% of our life feeling discouraged by the quite common downward moves. Bull markets move up slightly more often than down and bear markets do the opposite. Think three steps forward and two steps backwards. That is the nature of markets.

Even in powerful bull markets, the price will probably go down about 40% of the time, based on daily prices and 30% based on weekly prices.

The ?bull? will do everything it can to buck you off and force you out of the market.?Bull markets never make it easy. By the time it looks easy (say early 2000 in the NASDAQ), it is?too late to buy and it is time to exit.

It takes emotional stamina to hold your positions, and it takes determination to maintain perspective. Look at the weekly and monthly trends, look at the fundaments, and look at the sentiment.

Source

(2) Holding physical bullion and ?trading the metals? are different things

The gold market went down lately. Silver was down even more, and those of you who own physical gold and silver LOST NOTHING in the take-down.

If you are accumulating physical metals, now is an even better time than any time in the last five months. The stuff is on sale ? take advantage of the lower prices.

If you were leveraged or long the futures, you have my sympathy. I hope you had stops in play.

Markets bottom when the sentiment is least bullish or most bearish. The sentiment numbers currently indicate massive pessimism in both gold and silver markets. Great bottoms are constructed out of overwhelmingly bearish sentiment.

Source

(3) History says gold is money; creators of paper money don?t want competition; who do you trust most?

Because governments and central banks issue paper money backed by nothing but faith and credit, they are in competition with gold which is real money. Should we be surprised when they discount the importance of gold and discourage ownership? Should we be surprised when the ?Oracle of Omaha? denigrates gold ownership? (Berkshire Hathaway holds huge positions in banking stocks and Goldman Sachs stock.) Should we be surprised when news stories are heavily slanted against gold ownership?

Source

(4) Media has no interest in revealing the truth; they have their own agenda

Many in the media will tell you that gold is in a bubble, gold is a barbaric asset, gold is useless, gold is a bad investment, gold pays no interest, and gold is not safe. Many in the media will suggest that you are better off holding your savings in paper dollars guaranteed to lose purchasing power at 5 ? 10% per year and perhaps even more rapidly in the next few years. Is it in your self-interest to listen to such media nonsense and to hold your retirement and saving in a devaluing currency? Perhaps you should move a portion of your savings and retirement funds into gold and silver as has been done for several thousand years. Think SAFETY with NO counter-party risk!

Source

(5) Technical analysis is useful for timing, even in manipulated markets

There are two main objections to technical analysis. First, why bother with technical analysis when the silver and gold markets are overwhelmingly manipulated by large traders (JP Morgan, etc.), central banks, and government activities such as the ?plunge protection team?? Second, technical analysis does not work anyway.

I think most markets are manipulated or at least managed to some extent. I think the (paper) silver market has experienced short term managed selloffs that have nothing to do with supply and demand in the physical market. (When elephants fight, the grass gets trampled.) The manipulation is short term and makes technical analysis nearly useless during those short term manipulative episodes. But, in the longer term, in my opinion, the manipulation is just ?noise? and technical analysis is valuable.

As to the suggestion that technical analysis does not work, I think that is obviously false. The data indicates it does assist in determining the probability that a market will rise or fall. I use it and find value in it.

Traditional gender stereotypes found in staff attitudes towards ...

Whilst there has been significant progress in recent years in acknowledging the rights of people with learning disabilities to live their lives in the way they choose, responding to the right to be sexually active continues to throw up challenges for services and families.

Part of the difficulty is that people with learning disabilities may have few opportunities to develop loving relationships and have their sexual needs met, finding it difficult to get information about relationships and sex.

Advocacy organisations like Change have produced easy read information on the subject, recently producing a sexual health and relationships photo image bank, as knowledge can help people avoid situations where they may be exploited or abused.

Other organisations like the Ann Craft Trust? have focused on this latter issue, offering training and advice for families and staff.

The authors of this study were interested in exploring the attitudes of staff regarding the sexuality of people with learning disbaiities. Previous studies have shown these attitudes have often beennegative. The researchers were interested in particular in whether attitudes to sexaulity were affected by the gender of people with learning disabilities involved.

What they did was carry out a series of semi-structured interviews with 10 staff members and used thematic analysis to identify the themes that emerged.

What they found was that there were three main? themes:

  • Women were perceived by the staff as sexually innocen
  • Men were perceived as more sexually motivated
  • Motivations for sexual relationships were perceived to differ between men and women with learning disabilities

They conclude from their findings that the attitudes towards the sexuality of people with learning disabilities in the staff in their sample were unfavourable and correlated closely with traditional, restricted gender stereotypes.

They suggest that their findings highlight the importance of considering gender when supporting the sexuality of people with learning disabilities.

Hot chicks: At 60, Peeps more popular than ever

It's Easter morning. A boy rouses his younger brother, and they run to the living room to find their baskets filled with ? what else? ? Peeps.

"Peeps are THE candy of Easter," the excited boy tells his wide-eyed sibling, who pops a yellow marshmallow chick in his mouth.

"You can eat 'em, smash 'em, microwave 'em, deep fry 'em, roast 'em on a stick," the boy explains. That's not all. You can make "historically accurate Peeps dioramas ... Peeps pop art ... You can make a Peeps topiary." On he goes, all day and night. "Peeps jousting ... hide-and-go Peeps ... Peepshi ... that's sushi made out of Peeps."

As the storied candy brand celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, Peeps' first TV ad in a decade captures an essential truth about the spongy confection made of sugar, corn syrup and gelatin: Love them or hate them, people do all sorts of things with Peeps, only some of which involve giving them to kids at Easter or eating them straight from the box.

And they're not shy about sharing.

"Everyone seems to have a Peeps story," says Ross Born, third-generation operator of Just Born Inc., which hatches 5 million Peeps a day at its plant 60 miles north of Philadelphia. "And they are free and willing to talk about how they eat their Peeps, how they cure them, how they store them, how they decorate with them. And these are adults!"

Just Born calls it the "Peepsonality" of consumers who buy Peeps not only to eat, but also to play around with.

"If you had asked me about this 25 years ago, I would've been rather bewildered about the whole thing," Born confesses. "We were candymakers."

Not that he's complaining. Just Born had its best year financially in 2012.

His grandfather, Russian immigrant Sam Born, started the candy company out of a Brooklyn storefront 90 years ago. Born advertised the freshness of his product with a sign that said "Just Born." The name stuck.

The burgeoning business moved to Bethlehem and acquired the Peeps brand with its 1953 purchase of Rodda Candy Co. of Lancaster. Best known for its jelly beans, Rodda had also introduced a small line of marshmallow chicks and bunnies, employing dozens of women who hand-squeezed them out of pastry bags. "It was really very difficult, and these women were strong," said David Shaffer, Sam Born's nephew and co-CEO along with Ross Born.

Ross's father, Bob Born ? a physicist and engineer by training ? automated the process in the mid-1950s, and a version of the machine he invented is still in use today, extruding millions of those familiar shapes on peak-Peep production days.

The company, whose other brands are Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike, and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, has never suffered an unprofitable year. But its growth has always been relatively slow, steady and controlled, and a few years ago, Born and Shaffer decided they wanted to accelerate it.

The longtime partners brought in a new management team, spent heavily on marketing and broke back into the chocolate business, introducing chocolate-dipped Peeps as well as Peepsters, small chocolate candies filled with marshmallow-flavored cream. (New for this year is a yellow chick nestled in a hollow chocolate egg.) They also focused on holiday seasons other than Easter, particularly Christmas.

The result: Shaffer says last year was "off the charts." While Just Born is privately held and does not disclose revenue, he says it posted double-digit growth across all brands. And Shaffer sees more growth potential as the confectioner works to position its products in warehouse clubs and convenience stores.

Just Born certainly benefits from being part of a $33 billion candy industry that is seen as basically recession-proof, offering an inexpensive indulgence during tough economic times.

"Candy did not seem to take the hit that some other industries faced in recent years. We think a big reason for that is candy's place in our hearts and minds," says Susan Whiteside of the National Confectioners Association, a trade group.

Long associated with Easter, Peeps have penetrated the pop-culture consciousness in a way that other candy brands have not.

Aficionados send chicks into battle in a microwave "sport" known as Peeps jousting. They enter Peeps art contests, dozens of which are held around the country this time of year. They innovate recipes like "Peepza," a desert pizza. They write cheeky blog entries with titles like "101 Fun Ways to Torture a Peep."

Hoping to capitalize, Just Born recently opened three Peeps & Co. retail stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Minnesota.

While the company churns out more than 1 billion Peeps this Easter season ? a record ? it sees the 60th anniversary as another marketing opportunity and a chance to connect with its fans. In addition to the TV ad campaign, it's ramping up social media promoting a Facebook survey that asks knowing questions like this one: Do you like your Peeps fresh, frozen, or "aged to perfection"?

So which is it, Ross Born? Fresh or stale?

He's happy to address that perennial Peeps debate. Just don't ask him to take sides.

"There's a lot of gray area here," Born says diplomatically. "There are people who tell me they put a one-inch slice in the film (that seals the box), and they'll lay it on top of their refrigerator for two days. No more, no less. Then they are PERFECT to eat.

"So it's not necessarily stale, it's just a little firmer. All right? It's just like politics," says Just Born's commander-in-Peep. "You've got people way on one side, and way on the other side, but there are a whole lot of people in the middle."

Spaceport Development Picks Up Steam In Texas

Football is certainly a popular sport in Texas both for players and spectators. Where I lived it was definitely thought of as culturally important to a decent number of students, but that of course varied widely across the student body. And it was well funded with a nice field, good equipment, etc. On the other hand other activities didn't seem to suffer from lack of funding. I was in Academic Decathlon, the chess club, debate, and the tennis team. We had art classes, theater, band, orchestra, soccer, lacro

ShermanAP

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman quickly has become one of the most polarizing figures in football.? Starting with his decision to get in the face of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady after Seattle upset New England during the regular season and continuing through his recent Twitter battle with Jets (for now) cornerback Darrelle Revis, Sherman has landed on the national radar screen in a way that many regard as good, and that many regard as bad.

His fans say Sherman is confident.? Foes call him arrogant. On Thursday, he gave plenty of ammunition to the latter in his over-the-top effort to take down ESPN?s Skip Bayless.? Hardly a likeable figure in his own right, Bayless came off at times as the victim while absorbing a clumsy, charmless stream of insults from Sherman.Deadspin has the video.

?Skip, whenever you refer to me, whenever you speak to me, whenever you address me, address me as All-Pro Stanford graduate, because those are some accomplishments you will never ? you can aspire to, you will never accomplish,? Sherman said, right out of the gates.? ?You have never accomplished anything.?

Bayless wasn?t about to back down.? ?I think I?ve accomplished more in my field than you have in yours,? Bayless said.

?I?m at the top of my field,? Sherman declared.? ?I?m All-Pro.? I?m one of the best 22 players in the NFL.? You?re gonna brush it off.? But I don?t think you?re the best 22 anything.? In sports, in media, in anything.? I think you think more of yourself than you can actually prove.? In my 24 years of life, I?m better at life than you.?

?Do you think you?re better than Darrelle Revis right now?? Bayless asked.

?I?m better than you,? Sherman said.Later, Sherman said that Bayless is an ?ignorant, pompous, egotistical cretin, and I?m gonna crush you on here in front of everybody, because I?m tired of hearing about it.?

For as bad as the words, the delivery was worse.? Sherman displayed no charisma, which often is the difference between words being perceived as humorously brash and insufferably rude.

If that?s the attitude Sherman needs to have in order to be the best he can be on the field, that?s fine.? But it won?t win him many admirers beyond those who already are fans of the Seahawks.

AdvSecret.com How To Earn Money Online Part-Time? | AdvSecret ...

By Mike Zupp

Are you yearning to discover how to earn money online? You?ve heard the so-called ?gurus? proclaim how easy it is time and time again, but you still haven?t earned a single dime yet, right? They all swear by their favorite methods, but one definite way to get in the online earnings game is to start with Affiliate Marketing.

An everyday lay person can get into Affiliate Marketing by simply introducing prospects to Affiliate Vendor?s products and thereby earning a commission. On occasion, you can even make some extra income on the side by merely getting people to ?opt in? to Vendors? newsletter subscriptions!

Once you decide on which product to promote, you obtain what?s called an ?affiliate link?. This link is like a tracking device for all your referrals and it?s a way to make sure that you get your well-deserved commissions. Some of the most well-known Affiliate Marketing sites are Amazon, Clickbank, Ebay Partner Network and Commission Junction. These companies showcase thousands of products in numerous extensive niches for you to choose from.

In any event, you must figure out a good starting point if you?re going to be able to learn how to earn money online.

The first step is to pick a niche that you desire to be in: something that you love and that you could discuss all day-then it?s far easier for you to sell.

Check out the Google Keyword Tool: with this tool, you can pin down niches that are getting a lot of traffic. Then use it again to generate keywords for your chosen product. You can also search Google Trends to see if your particular niche is expanding in appeal. Clearly, do a Google search to discover these tools!

Secondly, select an affiliate product that is right for you. Make certain that you select products that interest you and that will also help solve a pressing problem for your targeted prospects. Only choose products that are of high quality and that have a good track record of sales.

Now that you have decided upon your specific niche and product, you now need to chart your product promotion. You?ll soon figure out how to earn money online by implementing the following handy strategies:

You can set the plan in motion by building a review site that will highlight your unbiased opinion of your chosen product. Make sure to address the negative, as well as the positive, features of your product in order to appear unbiased. I would also recommend that you actually buy the product so you can honestly critique it. If funds are a little low, have a look around forums and other review sites of the same product to gain pertinent knowledge of the product. Insert your affiliate link at the beginning and end of your product review article.

Social media sites can really help drive traffic to your website. You can build a Facebook fan page or add a Facebook app to an existing business page to feature your product. Just make certain that you put a link in there to redirect people to your website.

You?ve probably heard mention of ?squeeze? or ?landing? pages before, right? Well, their purpose is to ?squeeze? information, like names and email addresses, out of prospects and they can be built right inside Facebook or take the form of a one page website. You then take that assembled information and put it all into an autoresponder system. ?AWeber? is an excellent place to open one of these types of accounts. What happens next is that your prospective clients get a series of email messages in their inbox automatically over the course of a week or two. PFT: Chiefs cut Winston; sign of Joeckel at No. 1?

PryorGetty Images

With Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie telling Pro Football Talk at the Scouting Combine that a competition will occur for the starting quarterback job, this means that third-year backup Terrelle Pryor has a shot at winning the gig.

Pryor told Pro Football Talk on Wednesday that he?ll be ready to go if/when he gets the opportunity to start.? At this point, though, he?s focused on building credibility within the organization.

?Right now I?m trying to win over my coaches, win over my teammates and everybody in the facility and let them know that I wanna be a leader, a great leader and I?m there for the long haul and I wanna win just as bad as everybody else and that?s what I want to prove to everybody before I really get into talks of starting and stuff like that,? Pryor told Erik Kuselias.

Pryor stopped short of declaring himself to be the best quarterback currently on the roster.

?I don?t really wanna give comparisons or anything like that because Carson [Palmer] does a great job of what he does, and I can also play too and do some things well too,? Pryor said.? ?So I can?t down talk him because he?s a great QB to me and I just wanna stay on my side of seeing what I have to do to get better every single day and that?s where I?m at right now. ?

Still, with the trend toward mobile quarterbacks, Pryor knows he brings the ability to move to the table.

?I feel like I can extend plays and . . . you don?t know what your gonna get from me as a QB from a defensive perspective,? Pryor said.? ?They don?t know exactly if I?m gonna run the ball or can I hold onto the ball a little bit and add a little extra time to get a receiver open where I can do a three-step drop and throw the ball in time.? I feel like I can extend plays well and I?m so fast and I believe in my speed and I can get around and wait for guys to get open as well.?

How fast does Pryor think he is in comparison to other quarterbacks?? He thinks he?s do pretty well in a race against all of them.

?I believe, now don?t take this the wrong way this is just me believing in my speed and power and my legs, I believe I?d be second behind Michael Vick,? Pryor said.? ?No one else would beat me.?

We have a feeling that a few Redskins fans may have something to say about that.

Photo Evidence That D.C.'s Snowquester Isn't That Bad

FELDA SAHABAT, Malaysia (Reuters) - Malaysian security forces found 13 bodies of suspected Philippine militants as they expanded their hunt for an elusive armed group on the island of Borneo on Wednesday, a day after an assault with fighter jets, mortars and hundreds of troops. The nearly month-long confrontation in Sabah state, in Malaysia's part of Borneo, was sparked when the armed group of about 200 sailed from the nearby southern Philippines to press an ancient claim to the resource-rich region. "The total is 13. ...

White House tours nixed in wake of spending cuts

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama greet visitors during an open house Jan. 22, 2013. (Pete Souza/White??

Sorry, D.C. tourists. Your tour of the White House has fallen victim to the sequester.

The White House Visitors Office 24-hour help line on Tuesday informed callers that starting March 9, tours of the White House will be canceled due to the across-the-board spending cuts ordered by President Barack Obama last Friday in the absence of a federal budget passed by Congress:

Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours. We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular spring touring season. For updates regarding this situation, please contact the White House Visitors Office 24-hour hotline.

While some critics immediately argued that the savings from canceling tours was negligible, the White House did not cite savings as a chief reason for the decision. Instead, it said the decision was necessitated by staffing reductions.

The White House has been arguing that the sequester will be devastating to the economy and has warned of flight delays, food safety issues, customs and border problems, teacher layoffs and other negative consequences as a result of the cuts. Republicans say Democrats are exaggerating the sequester's impact and agencies can administer spending cuts in a way that won't cripple Americans.

The cancellation of tours creates a potential headache for lawmakers.

Requests and arrangements for White House tours are conducted through visitors' members of Congress.

A Consistent Way to Pick Winning Stocks - Zacks Investment Research

I use stock screeners every day.

I cannot imagine investing in stocks without the assistance of a screener.

There are over 10,000 stocks out there and you need a quick and reliable way to sort through them all.

It's not enough to type familiar ticker symbols into a website and do a spot check on whatever items happen to be displayed.

For one, most people's universe of familiar stocks is relatively small. And that alone will limit one's investment opportunities. And two, even if your universe of familiar stocks is larger than most, nobody's is big enough to stay abreast of them all.

Nor would you want to. Many stocks should not even be considered as investments. So you don't want to clutter your mind with those tickers.

But many others are worthy of consideration, and you need a way to get those onto your radar screen.

This is important. Many investors are not seeing the kinds of returns they want in their portfolios because their universe of familiar stocks is limited.

What's interesting is that some of your best performing stocks right now were likely new to you at some point.

But there are plenty of others that could also be top performers for you if you only knew about them.

And the best way to discover new, potentially profitable stocks is to regularly scan for the best opportunities.

Wish List

Some people avoid screeners because they think it's complicated, or they don't think they know enough about stocks to look for the right things.

But you don't have to be an analyst to benefit from a screener.

For example, if you're interested in finding some new stocks for your portfolio, just ask yourself some simple questions.

Such as: Do I want stocks that will see both sales growth and earnings growth next year?

If so, plug those into the screener.

Now, only those with your desired growth rates will appear on your list. And those with negative sales growth or negative earnings growth will NOT be on that list, so you don't have to waste your time on them.

Would you prefer your stocks to have low debt levels or high debt levels?

(If you're thinking about traits you'd like your stocks to have, I'm assuming you said low debt levels.) And if that's the case, plug that into your screener as well.

Now, only stocks with your desired growth rates AND low debt will come through.

Would you want your stock to post a positive surprise or negative surprise?

If you're bullish, you probably said positive surprise.

There's no foolproof way to perfectly predict which stocks will positively surprise in the future. However, studies have shown that stocks that have surprised in the past have a tendency to surprise again in the future. So by screening for stocks that have recently posted positive surprises, you are increasing your chances that those stocks will positively surprise for you.

Just go down your wish list of characteristics you'd like your stocks to have.

Your criteria do not have to be fancy, and your screens do not have to be complex. Much of it is common sense. And the screener will help you sift through all of the garbage so you can spend your time on only those worth considering.

Inspiration

A good screener can also inspire you and introduce you to new ways to pick good stocks.

In the Research Wizard (the screener that I use daily), there are hundreds of different screening items to pick and choose from. (I can even create my own.)

And they are all organized in easy to understand categories like Growth, Valuations, Margins, etc.

But in addition to the most common and most popular screening items, there are other lesser known items available, but no less powerful.

A great example is the R-Squared Growth Rate item. I had seen that item in the screener over and over again. One day I decided to test it. I read the definition that came with it and decided to give it a try.

Long story short, I was amazed at its predictability. And I ended up creating a screen with that little known item. And I was so glad I did. Because that screen was actually UP in the bear market of 2008 while the market plunged nearly -40%!

They say when you play a sport with someone better than you, it raises your game. Or when you work with a talented person, you perform better. The same is true with the tools that you use.

By seeing what a tool is capable of, it allows you to think about what you could be capable of.

I never would have 'discovered' the R-Squared Growth Rate item (not to mention countless others) if those items hadn't been staring at me and made available in a tool that allowed me to test them.

A good stock screener can inspire you and help you pick better stocks on a consistent basis. And as traders and investors, that's what we all want.

Today's screen focuses on some of my current wish list items:

  • Top 50% of Zacks Ranked Industries
(The top half of Zacks Ranked Industries has outperformed the bottom half by a factor of more than 2 to 1.)
  • Zacks Rank equal to 1
(Over the last 26 years, the Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks have shown an average annual return of 26% a year.)
  • Positive Projected Sales and EPS Growth
(Simply put, I want my stocks to be growing on both the top and bottom lines.)
  • Positive Sales and EPS Surprises
(As mentioned earlier, stocks that have surprised in the past have a tendency to surprise again in the future. This increases our chances of getting into stocks that will positively surprise for us.)
  • Expanding Margins
(If margins are going up, that means management has a good grip on costs, which allows more of each sale to be counted as earnings.
  • Price to Sales Ratio less than or equal to 1
(In my testing I have found that stocks with a Price to Sales (P/S) ratio of less than 1, significantly outperforms stocks with a P/S ratio higher than that. (Over 4 demonstrated the worst average returns.)

Here are 5 stocks that made it through the screen this week:

(AVY - Analyst Report) Avery Dennison Corp.
(Industry: Office Supplies, 75 out of 265, or top 28% of Zacks Ranked Industries)

(LZB - Snapshot Report) La-Z-Boy Inc.
(Industry: Furniture, 100 out of 265, or top 38% of Zacks Ranked Industries)

(GK - Snapshot Report) G&K Services Inc.
(Industry: Uniform & Related, 2 out of 265, or top 1% of Zacks Ranked Industries)

(CNO - Analyst Report) CNO Financial Group, Inc.
(Industry: Insurance-Multi Line, 23 out of 265, or top 9% of Zacks Ranked Industries)

(JOEZ - Snapshot Report) Joe's Jeans Inc.
(Industry: Textile-Apparel, 51 out of 265, or top 19% of Zacks Ranked Industries)

All of these stocks meet every single one of my current wish list items, which means you can focus your time on only the top selections.

A good screener can help you save time, discover new stocks, consistently find winners and inspire you to become a better trader.

Be sure to get the rest of the stocks on this list. And make sure you sign up for a free trial to our powerful, yet easy to use, screening and backtesting program for your own stock picking inspiration.

Algeria reels from tales of oil sector corruption - Politics news

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? Corrupt and gorging itself at the trough of Algeria's vast oil wealth ? that's how most Algerians privately view the elites running the country. Yet few have been willing to say so publicly, until now.

New corruption scandals are shining a new spotlight on state oil company Sonatrach, which jointly with BP and Norway's Statoil runs the desert gas plant that was the scene of a bloody hostage standoff in January.

A recent anguished public plea by a former Sonatrach official shocked Algerians and raised hopes that the leadership will try to clean up the oil and gas sector in Africa's largest country. There's plenty at stake: Algeria is also one of the continent's richest countries, as the No. 3 supplier of natural gas to Europe, with $190 billion in reserves, up $8 billion in the last year alone.

The Feb. 18 letter by former Sonatrach vice president Hocine Malti in the French-language Algerian daily El Watan broke the silence around the company. Addressing the shadowy leader of Algeria's intelligence service, it asks if he is really serious about investigating new bribery scandals involving Sonatrach and Italian and Canadian companies.

When Italian prosecutors in January announced an investigation into oil company ENI and subsidiary SAIPEM for allegedly paying ?197 million ($256.1 million) in bribes to secure an ?11 billion contract with Sonatrach, it provoked a firestorm in the Algerian media, until the North African country's justice system finally announced its own inquiry Feb. 10.

Malti, author of the "Secret History of Algerian Oil," scoffed that Algerian authorities were only following the lead of international investigators and wondered if Mohammed "Tewfik" Mediene, the feared head of the Department of Research and Security, would allow the real sources of corruption to be tried in court.

"Is it too much to dream that some of your fellow generals, certain ministers or corrupt businessmen ? members of the pyramid that you are on top of ? members of this fraternity, might also end up in front of justice?" he asked in the letter. "Or will it be like always, just the small fry are targeted by this new investigation?"

"Will we have to continue to listen for news from the Milan prosecutor to know the sad reality of our country, to discover how certain people, whom you know quite well, people you have come across in your long professional career, have gorged themselves on millions of dollars and euros of the country's oil revenues?" he added.

The response to the letter was swift. Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi promised that once an investigation was complete "we will take all necessary measures" against those harming the interests of the nation.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who rarely appears in public, said in a written statement, "these revelations provoke our disgust and condemnation, but I trust the justice system of our country to bring clarity to the web of accusations and discover who is responsible."

Malti told The Associated Press by telephone from his home in France that he wrote the letter partly out of anger that Algeria had to rely on foreign prosecutors to reveal the extent of its own corruption and addressed it to the head of intelligence to shock people.

"It made a lot of noise because with this letter, I broke a taboo," he said. "The head of the DRS is an unapproachable figure in Algeria, at times we can't even pronounce (say) his name." It is not the first time the state-owned hydrocarbon company, which provides Algeria with 97 percent of its hard currency earnings, has been enmeshed in scandal.

In 2010, its head, three of its vice presidents and the minister of energy were all fired in a corruption investigation run by Mediene's intelligence agency. However, rather than restore faith in the country's corruption-fighting mechanism, the 2010 purge was widely seen as a chance to settle scores between the DRS and Bouteflika, since most of those fired were his close associates.

Algeria ranks 105 out of 176 in Transparency International's 2012 corruption index, and the occasional corruption investigation often just seems to be how the elites settle their scores, such as a string of revelations about prominent politicians in November, which observers said were linked to next year's presidential elections.

"I realize that people might be shocked by what is happening at Sonatrach ? these scandals are terrible and we condemn them as individual acts," Sonatrach head Abdelhamid Zerguine said on the radio Sunday, the anniversary of Algeria's 1971 nationalization of its oil industry from the French. He promised to fight further corruption "with utmost vigor," even while denying it was systemic.

The scale of the scandals is staggering. Nearly ?200 million ($260 million) was paid out by the Italians, according to the Milan prosecutor. ENI has pledged full cooperation with prosecutors in their investigations.

Meanwhile, according to a joint investigation by Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper and an Italian business paper published Feb. 22, Canadian company SNC-Lavalin paid a series of bribes of its own to secure a $1 billion engineering contract. Company spokeswoman Lilly Nguyen responded to queries about the case saying "to the best of our knowledge, SNC-Lavalin is not specifically under investigation in the Sonatrach matter."

With commissions on deals like this going to the highest levels of power, the Algerian press rarely reports about it ? until the subject is broached by the foreign media. Malti, who was there at the founding of Sonatrach in 1963, estimated that the country was losing between $3 and 6 billion annually to corruption in the oil sector alone.

"If a judge says that an inquiry has opened or even a minister promises to take measures against 'people working against Algeria's interests,' I don't believe them," Mohammed Saidj, a professor of international relations at Algiers University, told the AP. "It's just words to appease a public opinion shocked when it hears about the corruption and billions of dollars stolen by high-level political and military officials, including those close to the president."

The chances of this situation changing are dim, considering how much the country relies on a single company. In a chapter on Sonatrach in the 2012 book "Oil and Governance," John Entelis, an Algeria expert at New York's Fordham University, described the importance of a company established just a year after Algeria won its independence from France, and wrote, "Algeria's governing elite rely upon Sonatrach for revenue from which they gain power, patronage, and privileges."

Entelis told AP that the letter in El Watan shows that Algerians are increasingly able to complain about this system, even if that won't necessarily change things. "This is the heart of the Algerian political system ? Sonatrach, the DRS, civil society in the form of ... willingness to make these things public. Some say this is what enables it to maintain itself instead of collapse," he said.

Paul Schemm reported from Rabat, Morocco. Associated Press writer Karim Kebir contributed to this report from Algiers, Algeria.

SEFFNER, Fla. (AP) ? Crews with heavy equipment on Sunday began the demolition of a Florida home over a huge sinkhole where a man is presumed dead after being swallowed by the earth three days ago.

The search for Jeff Bush, 37, was called off Saturday, and a heavy machine with a large bucket scoop was moved into position Sunday on what was believed to be solid ground. The 20-foot-wide opening of the sinkhole was almost covered by the house, and rescuers said there were no signs of life since the hole opened Thursday night.

Jeremy Bush, the man who tried to save his brother, was escorted with a woman by a deputy to the front of the house early Sunday before equipment moved into position. He repositioned some flowers from a makeshift memorial to a safer location, where Bush and the unidentified women knelt in prayer.

People gathered on lawn chairs, bundled up with blankets against unusually chilly weather. Several dozen milled about within view, including officials and reporters.

Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said officials had talked to Bush family Sunday. Crews would try their best to move the structure forward, toward the street, so the family can get some belongings, Merrill said.

"We don't know, in fact, whether it will collapse or whether it will hold up," he said.

He said crews' goal for Sunday is to knock down the house, and on Monday they will clear the debris as much as possible to allow officials and engineers to see the sinkhole in the open.

Bush was in his bedroom Thursday night in Seffner ? a suburb of 8,000 people 15 miles east of downtown Tampa ? when the ground opened and took him and everything else in his room. Five others in the house escape unharmed as the earth crumbled.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. Detective Larry McKinnon said that sheriff's office and the county medical examiner cannot declare Bush dead if his body is still missing. Under Florida law, Bush's family must petition a court to declare him deceased.

"Based on the circumstances, he's presumed dead, however the official death certificate can only be issued by a judge and the family has to petition the court," McKinnon said.
