Time to Expedite Renewable Energy | BuzzFlash.org

In 2009 it seemed as though Congress was finally going to pass legislation that would transition our country to a renewable energy future. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill, would have created a cap and trade system on greenhouse gases, required electric utilities through a renewable electricity standard (RES) to meet 20 percent of their electricity demand through renewable energy sources and energy efficiency by 2020, subsidized renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, and financed modernization of the electrical grid, among many other provisions.

The bill was approved by the House of Representatives on June 26, 2009 by a vote of 219-212, but died in the Senate. The vote was the first time either house of Congress had a bill on the floor that would curb the heat-trapping gases scientists have linked to climate change. Though the bill included some not so favorable items, such as subsidies for carbon capture and sequestration, and not nearly an aggressive enough RES, it would have been considerably better than doing nothing.

In addition to what seemed like progress on federal energy legislation, nearly 20 states had passed their own energy bills mandating a RES with a variety of percentages of renewable energy being generated in upcoming years. These states were at the forefront of the renewable energy evolution and are responsible for thousands of renewable projects that bolstered local economies by creating green jobs and increasing manufacturing of solar and wind products in the U.S. Finally, it looked as if the renewable energy marketplace was gaining ground and we were going to pass federal energy legislation that would create a sustainable economy.

I spent that year lobbying and educating EcoWatch readers on the Waxman-Markey Bill and Ohio's energy bill SB 221, working at the local level on solar and wind zoning, and fighting the proposed 1,000-megawatt conventional coal-fired power plant that American Municipal Power of Ohio planned to build in the already sacrificed-zone of Meigs County, Ohio. Feeling like my advocacy work wasn't enough, I launched Expedite Renewable Energy, a company which helps businesses and residents through the many steps of investing in solar and wind projects.

Unfortunately the federal bill failed, and with the new leadership in the House following the 2010 Congressional elections no hope remained that an energy bill mandating a RES and cap and trade system would be prioritized again any time soon. In addition, some of the strong energy bills passed on the state level began diminishing in return depending on the leadership in each state. In Ohio, SB 221 remains active but the main incentive driver, the Advanced Energy Fund, sunsetted and was not renewed which has significantly decreased the amount of investment in renewable energy projects and the economic boost the state was receiving in green jobs and manufacturing.

Now three years later, I'm left feeling like we took two steps forward and ten steps back. The amazing part is that a large majority of Americans want renewable energy and understand the implications of continued reliance on fossil fuels-like coal, natural gas and oil-and know that if we don't transition to cleaner sources of energy now, the air we breathe and the water we drink will continue to be compromised to a point of no return.

So what's keeping us from moving forward when we live in a democratic society? For me, it's as simple as money in politics. We need to reverse Citizens United and get money out of politics once and for all. But we can't completely blame the political system. It is also up to every American to educate themselves on these issues and implement sustainability practices to reduce energy usage and conserve our natural resources.

Of course the grassroots environmental movement plays a vital role in educating people and encouraging strong environmental policy. That is why EcoWatch is taking on the call to unite the voices of the grassroots environmental movement and all Americans around a honed in message asking Congress to expedite renewable energy.

NEW YORK (AP) ? General Electric's shift back to its manufacturing roots is paying off.

The conglomerate founded by light bulb inventor Thomas Edison has pumped billions of dollars into new energy-related businesses during the past few years while selling its stake in NBC, commercial real estate and other businesses. The move has softened the blow from the recession, and it expects double-digit earnings growth this year.

GE said Friday that net income fell 16 percent in the second quarter, mainly due to lingering charges from financing companies that were sold off four years ago. Its energy infrastructure business, meanwhile, reported double-digit growth in the period, and profits surged for its transportation business. The company's quarterly results topped Wall Street expectations.

GE is wading through "a still volatile global economy," CEO Jeff Immelt said. But its core businesses are growing profits, and "we ended the quarter with a record backlog."

Shares rose 35 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $20.15 in midday trading. That approaches its 52-week high of $21 per share.

The industrial and financial giant posted net income of $3.11 billion, or 29 cents per share, in the April-June period. That compares with $3.69 billion, or 35 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding pension costs and losses from discontinued businesses, GE earned 38 cents per share, a penny above analysts' average expectations of 37 cents per share.

Revenue rose 2 percent to $36.5 billion, led by strong results in GE's industrial business. Analysts expected slightly higher revenue of $36.77 billion, according to FactSet.

GE said its net income was weighed down in the quarter by a number of charges that had little to do with its core businesses. GE booked a $553 million charge related to the 2008 sale of its WMC Mortgage Corp. and its consumer finance business in Japan. GE also adjusted its pension costs higher.

Meanwhile, its energy infrastructure and GE Capital businesses reported higher profits in the period.

GE Capital, the company's lending arm, increased profits 31 percent as it sold off dozens of properties and booked smaller charges related to a drop in real estate values. GE lans to sell its business property lending business to EverBank Financial Corp. for $2.51 billion by the end of 2012.

Morningstar analyst Daniel Holland said it makes sense for GE to shed assets that have little to do with the company's traditional industrial businesses. GE knows the energy and manufacturing businesses and that is where it should remain, Holland said.

"It's what they're really good at," he said. "It's why they can continue to drive their competitive advantages."

Energy infrastructure, which includes wind and natural gas turbines, solar panels and a variety of other products and services, increased profits 13 percent to $1.76 billion. GE said it shipped 726 wind turbines in the quarter, more than double what it shipped in the same period last year. New orders for wind turbines have dropped off since then, however, reducing GE's infrastructure orders by 1 percent.

In a separate announcement, GE said that it plans to split its energy business into three separate operations: GE Power and Water in Schenectady, N.Y., GE Oil and Gas in Florence, Italy, and GE Energy Management in Atlanta. Immelt said that the move will streamline its various energy operations and cut about $200 million to $300 million in costs. GE said the head of the division, John Krenicki, has decided to leave the company at the end of the year.

GE reaffirmed its outlook for double-digit growth in earnings per share, excluding any special items.

All three people who were quoted above appear to have been in the theater complex when a heavily armed gunman opened fire on moviegoers, according to police.

The third post appears to be from Jessica Ghawi, who was reported dead in the shooting. Ghawi was a former sports-news intern at a television station in San Antonio, according to that station, Fox 29. ?It?s true, my former intern Jessica Ghawi was a victim in the shootings last night. She used @JessicaRedfield as her twitter handle,? wrote a Twitter user identified as Mike Taylor.

In the hours after the shooting, her friend mourned her death in real time.

?Devastated,? wrote a sports radio host in Denver, identified online as Peter Burns. ?Lost a very close friend in the shooting last night. @JessicaRedfield came to Denver to pursue sports career. I?m shaking.?

The horrifying posts highlight a shift in the way our society tells the story of a tragedy, and also how we react to it. Before Twitter, smartphones and YouTube, it would have been impossible for an event like Colorado?s ?Batman Massacre? to have played out for the global public in real time.

The shooting is just the latest instance of social media being used to document a tragedy or a news event even as it is unfolding. A Pakistani man last year unwittingly live-tweeted the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. And the war in Syria is being documented in large part by citizens and members of the opposition movement who risk their lives to post YouTube videos and photos of the violence.

But the social media posts about the Colorado shooting are a haunting reminder of the visceral power of first-person accounts of tragedy. And also a sign that society these days deals with grieving after an event like this in a much more public and immediate way than in years past.

Reports of the 1999 Columbine school shooting, for example, which happened only 17 miles from Aurora, spread in a much different way. Thirteen years ago, witnesses talked to TV crews rather than uploading their stories instantly to the Internet with mobile phones.

Some reports from the Aurora movie theater appeared to come out as the shooting occurred.

?Now I?m thinking it was bullets coming through the wall from 9 causing smoke and fire cracker sounds. #aurorashooting #batman #shootng,? a Twitter user identified as Jamie Marshall wrote.

?Never seen so many cop cars in my life. Its a parade of lights,? wrote Isaac Ramos.

?Everything keeps replaying in my head. It was so unreal,? @DjaylaRene wrote.

?I am getting ready to cry. So scared. I need a hug. I almost got shot 9 times. I had a chance to be like 50,? wrote another Twitter user, @Abenistar.

He later added: ?I seen a person bleeding out their mouth and gasping for their last breath. This ain?t right. #Century16Shooting. Thunk the world is ending.?

Shaky YouTube videos show people screaming, crying and rushing out of the theater after the shooting, some of them with bloody wounds. Another video, apparently taken outside the building by a person who was in the theater next to the shooting, offers a glimpse into the mindset of a person who has just witnessed tragedy. The amateur videographer sounds to be at a loss for words.

?Oh Jesus. July 20th, 2012. Aurora Century 16,? he says, in a sort of real-time confessional about the event. ?There has been a massive shooting here. A lot of people wounded, a lot of people dead. I can?t really take pictures, just because I?d rather (be) helping people than wanting to take pictures of some pretty ghastly (expletive). There?s some guy in a gas mask apparently ? teargassed theater 9. We were in theater 8. Just lit it up. It hit a lot of people, a lot of younger people. Oh. It?s pretty ? it?s pretty bad.?

Officials also turned to the Internet in an effort to make sense of the events.

The Red Cross is asking people who witnessed the shooting to tell loved ones that they were OK over social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

?People don?t know how close you were, so help alleviate that anxiety,? spokeswoman Patricia Billinger told USA Today.

And other officials used the Internet to offer sympathy.

?We certainly appreciate the nation?s thoughts and prayers as our police department continues to investigate the terrible theater shooting tragedy that occurred today,? the city of Aurora wrote on its Facebook page. ?Our condolences go out to the victims and their family members.?
