LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands (AP) ? International judges sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison Wednesday, saying he was responsible for "some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history" by arming and supporting Sierra Leone rebels in return for "blood diamonds."
The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II and judges said they had no precedent when deciding his sentence.
Taylor will serve his sentence in a British jail. His lawyers, however, said they will appeal his convictions and that will likely keep him in a jail in The Hague, Netherlands, for months.
Prosecutor Brenda Hollis also said she was considering an appeal.
"It is important in our view that those responsible for criminal misconduct on a massive scale are not given a volume discount," Hollis said.
The Special Court for Sierra Leone convicted Taylor last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a brutal rampage during that country's decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead.
At a small protest outside the court, one man held up a hand-written placard proclaiming: "Blood diamonds are not forever. They come at a cost Taylor."
Taylor showed no emotion as he stood while Lussick handed down what was effectively a life sentence.
"The lives of many more innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were lost or destroyed as a direct result of his actions," Presiding Judge Richard Lussick said.
Prosecutors had asked for an 80-year sentence; Taylor's lawyers urged judges to hand down a sentence that offered him some hope of release before he dies.
Hollis said the sentence would only provide a measure of closure for victims of one of Africa's most savage conflicts.
"The sentence that was imposed today does not replace amputated limbs. It does not bring back those who were murdered," she said. "It does not heal the wounds of those who were victims of sexual violence and does not remove the permanent emotional and psychological and physical scars of those enslaved or recruited as child soldiers."
Lussick said an 80-year sentence would have been excessive as Taylor was convicted of aiding and abetting crimes and not direct involvement.
But the judge added that Taylor was "in a class of his own" compared to others convicted by the United Nations-backed court.
"The special status of Mr. Taylor as a head of state puts him in a different category of offenders for the purpose of sentencing," Lussick said.
Taylor's lead attorney, Courtenay Griffiths, warned that the court's refusal to take into account Taylor's decision to step down from power following his indictment in 2003 when setting his sentence sent a worrying message against the backdrop of ongoing atrocities allegedly being committed by Syrian government forces.
"What lesson does that send to President Assad?" Griffiths said. "Maybe the lesson is: If you are a sitting leader and the international community wants to get rid of you either you get murdered like Col. Gadhafi, or you hang on until the bitter end. I'm not so sure that's the signal this court ought to be transmitting at this particular historical juncture."
At a sentencing hearing earlier this month, Taylor expressed "deepest sympathy" for the suffering of victims of atrocities in Sierra Leone, but insisted he had acted to help stabilize the West Africa region and claimed he never knowingly assisted in the commission of crimes.
"What I did...was done with honor," he said. "I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward."
Judges rejected that argument, saying that while he posed as a peacemaker he was covertly funning the flames of conflict by arming rebels in full knowledge they would likely use weapons to commit terrible crimes.
Prosecutors said there was no reason for leniency, given the extreme nature of the crimes, Taylor's "greed" and misuse of his position of power.
"The purposely cruel and savage crimes committed included public executions and amputations of civilians, the display of decapitated heads at checkpoints, the killing and public disembowelment of a civilian whose intestines were then stretched across the road to make a check point, public rapes of women and girls, and people burned alive in their homes," prosecutor Brenda Hollis wrote in a brief appealing for the 80-year sentence.
Taylor stepped down and fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted by the court in 2003. He was finally arrested and sent to the Netherlands in 2006.
While the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial is being staged in Leidschendam, a suburb of The Hague, for fear holding it in West Africa could destabilize the region.

The trial of Jerry Sandusky will begin next week in Pennsylvania as scheduled, the presiding judge ruled Wednesday, denying a request for a delay by lawyers for the former Penn State assistant football coach.
"The reality of our system of justice is that no date for trial is ever perfect, but some dates are better than others," wrote Judge John Cleland ahead of a pre-trial hearing Wednesday afternoon to take care of any remaining matters.
Sandusky's lawyers and state prosecutors will begin picking jurors from a pool of State College-area residents on Tuesday.?
Sandusky is charged with 52 counts of child sexual abuse.?The 68-year-old?former defensive coordinator for Penn State's famed football program denies the allegations.?
Still unresolved are a defense effort to have the charges dismissed and motions by four alleged victims to have their identities protected by court order.
Cleland also issued a decorum order to address issues raised by the widespread public interest the case has generated.

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil rose above $91 a barrel Monday in Asia as Greek polls suggested pro-austerity parties might win elections next month, raising the likelihood the country will stay in the euro common currency.
Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 76 cents to $91.62 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 20 cents to settle at $90.86 in New York on Friday.
Brent crude for July delivery was up 76 cents at $107.59 per barrel in London.
Opinion polls published Sunday indicated two parties that favor implementing Greece's bailout programs could be able to form a coalition government. Greek politicians were unable to form a government after an election earlier this month, requiring new elections in June.
Crude has dropped from $106 the first week of May amid fears a chaotic Greek exit from the euro would deepen economic malaise and weaken crude demand in Europe. Easing tensions over Iran nuclear program amid talks between Iran and six world powers have also helped lower oil prices.
Some analysts expect oil will linger near present prices until after the Greek vote, OPEC's quarterly meeting and the next round of Iran nuclear discussions all take place in mid-June.
"Both European debt and Iranian nuclear issues are on something of a hold for another month," Barclays said in a report. "We would not expect the oil market to gain much of a sustained sense of direction" before those events.
Markets in the U.S. will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.
In other energy trading, heating oil was up 2.3 cents at $2.85 per gallon and gasoline futures added 3.6 cents to $2.86 per gallon. Natural gas fell 15.2 cents at $2.50 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Traditionally Memorial Day is to honor the memories of those we've lost, particularly those who sacrificed their lives in military service for our country. In contemporary practice, some visit cemeteries to plant flowers at graves, some attend memorial services with their religious community, but typically we celebrate this long weekend by opening swimming pools, firing up the barbecues for the season, or making a fashion change. Rabbi Steven Moskowitz learned this from his religious school students, as related in Hadassah Magazine, 2009:
One girl told the rabbi, "After Memorial Day, one can wear white." I had no idea what she was talking about. With complete unawareness of my social inadequacies, I asked, "What do you mean you can wear white?" The girls became excited and animated. Here was a chance to teach their rabbi about fashion etiquette. "After Memorial Day, you can wear white pants and carry a white pocketbook," one girl explained. "You can always wear a white shirt, but only after Memorial Day can you really wear white." I was dumbfounded. I looked to the [women] ... teachers for help. "Yes," they nodded to me. "It is true. After Memorial Day, you can wear white. But only until Labor Day." "Why?" I asked. One girl attempted to answer me. "You just don't." They all looked at each other and nodded. I was still perplexed. They were still certain.
As a society, we're seduced from our values by speed, instant communication around the globe and ever-more-dramatic distractions. We're so busy doing -- persuaded that what we do will give us meaning. If we stop long enough to take a breath, which is the opportunity of a holi-day (holy day), we realize that what we really yearn for is relationship, real intimacy that tethers us to earth and to each other.
Our deepest bonds and fondest memories may be bound up with those who are no longer living. Intimate connections are not limited to life.
In a program I recently led, I invited participants to write a legacy letter to someone to make an amend or express a regret. After the workshop, a rather troubled-looking young woman approached me to say that she thought she'd "done it wrong." I assured her that every legacy letter is unique and there is no way to write it wrong. Did she want to share what she'd written? She explained: She'd written to apologize to her father. I felt confused; what was wrong? She continued, clarifying that in fact her father was dead. I said, "No problem; now you know that relationships and love don't end with death." She looked relieved... and then before she walked off, she reflected that she felt really good about what she'd written, and believed she couldn't have told her father while he was alive.
This experience reinforced my understanding that relationships don't end with death -- that healing and transformation can happen when we simply stop, recall, reflect, and reclaim our memories, honoring those no longer here in the flesh.
One more thing before we get practical with some ideas for legacy writing to transform your weekend into a holi-day.
Many years ago my former husband and I went to a professional dinner; we were seated with a couple we didn't know. As soon as we introduced ourselves, the men began to talk business, and I guess we did too. We began a conversation about our children. I no longer recall why, but she told me that she'd lost a child in his first few weeks of life. I murmured some appropriate words of condolence, and then I asked her what his name was. She began to cry, hesitated, and through her tears spoke his name: Alexander. She went on, still crying, to explain that she'd not said his name aloud since he'd been buried 15 years earlier. She thanked me for asking, and giving her the opportunity to speak aloud the name of this beloved and lost baby, rarely spoken of, and never named.
The very first legacy we receive at birth are our names. I quote here from chapter one "What's in a Name?" in my own book, Women's Lives, Women's Legacies:
Most of us take our names for granted, never fully exploring this essential part of our identity.
Your name connects you to your family and ethnic group, to your heritage. It marks the place in the world where you belong... Your name connects you to the past. It speaks of memory, legacy, and immortality, of a special relationship with the person for whom you were named.
From a legacy perspective, Memorial Day gives us an annual opportunity to make the secular sacred, to name, remember, communicate with, and preserve memories of family members and loved ones now gone.
Some suggestions/action steps:
1. Choose someone who's died who you want to remember today. He or she may be a war veteran (Afghanistan, Iraq, Gulf, Vietnam, Korea, WWII or earlier) or your parent or grandparent, a partner, a child. Choose someone whose memory you want to honor, someone who you cared about or loved, someone who was special in your life, someone who left legacies especially for you, perhaps someone for whom you were named.
2. With your favorite pen and paper, write the person's name and today's date at the top of your paper.
3. Take a few minutes to focus your thoughts on the person you chose: reflect, remember, recall jotting notes as you do.
4. Next: Take no more than 15 minutes to write a letter to the person or your recollections about the person to capture and preserve your memories.
5. Consider sharing what you write with family or others who knew this person, perhaps making it part of the weekend's barbecue. Or consider inviting those at the pool party to share memories of or a legacy from a family member who has died. It may be the beginning of a new family tradition, a deepening of relationships with those in the conversation, or a legacy book to preserve memories that can be read again and again, added to each year. Take time to make this day a Memorial Day.

Takeaway: CIOs need to play nicely with the CFO over technology purchasing - but rarely do.
The CFO is becoming a top technology investment decision maker in many organisations - and in some cases is already the main driving force.
The CFO?s role in technology decision making is increasing: 44 per cent of CFOs interviewed said their influence over IT investment has increased since 2010, while 47 per cent said it has remained the same and just nine per cent said it had declined, according to a study by Gartner and Financial Executives Research Foundation.
The survey said that while CFOs and CIO are well positioned to work together on business IT investments, this collaboration often fails to take place because of ?a failure to invest in the CFO-CIO relationship?.
CIOs would be unwise to ignore their relationship with the CFO, as the survey emphasised how much power the finance chief has over tech investment decisions.
Some 41 per cent of CFOs said they are the leader of a group responsible for IT investment, and another 41 per cent said they were part of such a group. Another 16 per cent said they provided advice and one per cent said they were the sole decision maker.
Some good news for CIOs: according to the survey, 44 per cent of CFOs are forecasting an increase in IT operational spending in 2012, and a slightly higher number - 48 per cent- see an upturn in capital spending too, with business intelligence and analytics top of the list.

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) ? Usain Bolt won the 100 meters in 10.04 seconds in the wind at the Golden Spike meet Friday, his first victory in Europe leading to the London Olympics.
The Jamaican had a slow start but pulled ahead in the final meters. He failed to improve his season best of 9.82 from a May meet in Jamaica. Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis finished second in 10.19, followed by Darvis Patton of the U.S. in 10.22.
"It's hard to explain," Bolt said. "I don't really know what went wrong."
Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius failed to secure an Olympic spot after he was timed in 47.66 seconds in the 400, finishing eighth. Pistorius needs to run 45.30 or faster once more before June 30 to earn a trip to London in line with South Africa's Olympic criteria.
Before the race, Bolt said he was working on his notoriously slow start in hopes of bettering his world records in the 100 and 200 in London. Bolt won three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.
"At the start I didn't feel as explosive as I normally feel like," he said.
This was Bolt's sixth competition in Ostrava.
"I was looking to come here for a good time. I guess it's one of those days," he said. "I just never got going."
The runners had to start twice after Simon Magakwe false started. That was something familiar for Bolt, who failed to defend the world championship title in the 100 in Daegu, South Korea after he was disqualified for a false start.
But Bolt said that was not a problem for him in Ostrava.
"I did some starts and I was flying from the blocks so I said, Yeah this is good.' I can't tell you what happened."
Bolt will have another chance to lower his times in Diamond League meets in Rome on May 31 and Oslo, Norway, on June 7 before returning to Jamaica for the national trials.
In the meantime, he said he will seek advice from his coach.
"I have to look at the tape and see what went wrong and call my coach to explain to me what I did wrong," he said.
He plans to be back in Europe to run in the 200 at the Diamond League meet in Monaco on July 20, his last race before the Olympics start a week later.
Elsewhere, Olympic javelin champion Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic looked strong, winning with her best throw of 222 feet, 4 inches to delight the home crowd with the leading performance in the world this season. World champion Mariya Abakumova, who beat Spotakova at last year's worlds, was second at 211-1.
"It's a wonderful feeling," Spotakova said. "I was hoping to win but to achieve also the world leading (distance) and meet record is fantastic. I fulfilled my goals."
Renaud Lavillenie of France cleared 19-4 ? for the season's best in the men's pole vault, edging Karsten Dilla of Germany, who cleared 18-9 ?. Steven Lewis of Britain was third.
